The day before my mom left we made another trip into DC. The mission: the elusive cherry blossom! Surrounding the Tidal Basin and Jefferson Memorial are thousands of cherry trees. Originally a gift from Japan in 1912. The annual festival during the time of the blooming trees is a celebration of the lasting friendship between the two countries. {HERE is the full history lesson; I wonder if there were any festivities during our 'friendship' in the 40s..........aahhhh, i digress...}
So Spring this year has been a major tease! It's warm...and then cold....mostly cold, we even had snow last week...on Kayla's first day of 'Spring' break!
Here it is, April, and most of the trees still don't have their leaves back! So of course the cherry trees are taking their sweet time to bloom. But it was my moms last full day so we were determined to find some!
It was a beautiful day! Warm enough to go in with just light sweaters.
Jefferson Memorial
As we wandered around the Tidal Basin tree after tree looked like this:
SOOOOO close to blooming! And then, randomly, we found one tree in just about full bloom!
It really was quite beautiful. Then we moved on to the Jefferson Memorial and a picnic lunch.
*photo courtesy of Kayla! not bad :)*
From there we took a round-about way back to the metro station, taking in a few more sights.
This was the day of the White House Easter Egg Roll. Looks like a crazy mess to me!
By this time mom and I were feeling like a little frozen treat. From a distance we saw the Good Humor truck and thought 'bingo!' and made a bee-line to it. In our intense desire for ice cream we overlooked the fact that we were about 4 decades to late and this was in fact an exhibit if front of the National Museum of American History! hahaha, that gave us a good laugh for the rest of the afternoon!
Instead, we settled for a chocolate chip cookie from the refreshment kiosk across the street!
Just as we were about to go down to the metro we spied beautiful pink peaking around 'the castle' so of course we had to investigate!
A wonderful little glimpse of Spring!
By now we were definitely pushing nap time!
Another FUN day in DC!
